MHC multimers have a high avidity for T cell receptors and so provide a vital tool in the accurate detection and separation of antigen-specific T cells for events as rare as 0.01% of total CD8+ T cells. The determination of antigen-specific T cell frequencies by multimer staining allows in-depth evaluation of the T cell immune response in a wide range of disease areas including cancer research, viral immunity, transplantation immunology, autoimmunity and vaccine development.
